Background
The voters of New Jersey passed a referendum to legalize casino gaming in Atlantic City in 1976. In 1978, the first casino opened. Since then, casino gaming has become a major business in "America's favorite playground," with annual gaming revenues of approximately $5 billion.
Atlantic City is the 2nd largest American casino destination after Las Vegas, and today has 11 casinos. Casinos are licensed by the Casino Control Commission and investigated and policed by the Division of Gaming Enforcement.
The information on these pages has been extracted from the Casino Control Commission's annual reports. Whenever the CCC reports have been in conflict or have had mathematically incompatible numbers, we have done our best to provide the best possible statistics.
