Background
The State of Missouri has casino gaming on riverboats, charitable gaming (bingo), and a lottery. Casinos Missouri casino gambling takes place on riverboats, under the auspices of the Missouri Gaming Commission. The Missouri Gaming Commission was established in 1993 by the 87th General Assembly as specified by Chapter 313 RSMo to regulate excursion gambling boats. There are 12 riverboat gaming casinos in Missouri. This industry employs approximately 10,900 people with an annual payroll of approximately $347 million. Lottery Development: The Missouri Lottery was created by the passage of a constitutional amendment on November 6, 1984. Ticket sales began January 20, 1986, with the introduction of a single scratch-off game, Jackpot 86. Beneficiaries: Approximately 26.4 cents of every dollar spent on the Missouri Lottery benefits Missouri's public education program. Lottery funds help support a variety of programs including the A+ program, Virtual Schools, Special Education Excess Costs, construction of college and university buildings, library acquisitions and educational scholarships.
