1993 Inductee Harvey Gross Industry Leader
Harvey Gross (1905-1983) developed one of the most successful casinos of Lake Tahoe, insisting on its viability as a resort when others refused to believe. Gross started modestly in Lake Tahoe with a six-slot operation in 1944. He'd come to Tahoe in 1937 from Sacramento, where he had been a successful butcher and meat wholesaler. Initially running a meat market at Tahoe, Gross later decided to concentrate of gaming. By the 1960s, Gross had expanded his South Shore property into Harvey's Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gaming Hall. For decades, Gross and his wife Llwellyn were among the foremost boosters of Lake Tahoe, and the success of the region as a gaming destination owes a great deal to their perserverence. Gross passed away in 1983. |
